By default, Ubuntu places an icon for each volume you mount on your system. This is a little annoying. To hide the volume icons, simply run gconf-editor, then look for apps > nautilus > desktop. Uncheck the volumes_visible entry. Now the icons will no longer be on the desktop. You can still access them from the Places menu, or if you have mounted them, from your filesystem.
