Ubuntu 8.10 Ibex

After having some problems updating to the Release Candidate, I decided to try out Debian. However, since Debian is currently in a freeze which some predict may last until June next year, I decided maybe I'll try that another time and returned to Ubuntu.

The final release actually worked very well. I have a HP Pavilion dv2308tx Intel Core 2 Duo processor, Intel 945GM series wireless, Intel high definition audio, nVidia GeForce 7200 graphics card, HP bluetooth and Microdia Pavilion Webcam.

Wireless and audio worked flawlessly immediately as did bluetooth and the webcam. For 3D acceleration worked once the restricted driver was installed through the hardware drivers interface. With Ibex, the brightness control also works, which haven't worked since pre-Gutsy days.

To get bluetooth working, I had to install the gnome-bluetooth package, which included the file sharing program and integration with gnome desktop. With that, I was able to transfer files and use my mobile phone as a remote control.

Suspend and hibernate also works immediately!

To get Chinese input, I needed to install scim-tables, and run im-switch -z all_ALL -s scim

Features I like most includes the multi-timezone/calendar applet (which was introduced in Hardy), the new GIMP 2.6, Pidgin is a lot less buggy compared to the one on Hardy and there's MIDI support from gstreamer (Hardy started providing MIDI support, but has a bug which prevents fails after finish playing a MIDI file).

Things I don't like are OpenOffice 3 requires adding 3rd party repository. That's all I can think of at the moment... So all in all I like this new release.

Real Time Kernel

OK, I've found another more important thing that is missing from 8.10, it is the real time kernel. The one that is available is not the latest version, and also it doesn't have SMP support, so for those with dual cores, it only utilises one CPU!

According to UbuntuStudio, they are working hard to try and fix that - so hopefully it will be ready soon.
