Phone-driving

The Sydney Morning Herald today published a story about the move to band all use of mobile phones while driving, including the use of hands-free. It cites that there are a growing number of research into mobile phone use and the decrease in driving ability due to distraction. However, I wonder how much more dangerous is it than compared to chatting with someone in the car or listening to the radio?

Most studies I've seen involved the driver doing some mathematical problems or similar brain intensive operations. I wonder how different would the result be if those questions were asked by a passenger rather than through the phone. If the difference is neglegible, then all the result of the research shows is that the calculation of mathematical problems while driving increases the risk of accidents.
