Rotating Backgrounds in Ubuntu

In Ubuntu 9.10, it includes a rotating cosmos background which automatically rotates through a collection of pictures from space. It also includes a number of really nice background. So I thought, wouldn't it be nice to have Ubuntu automatically rotate through all the background images...

Fortunately, it is not difficult - the rotating backgrounds is driven by an XML file which specifies the file to show, and the transition to go through. If you want to rotate through all the background images, download the following XML file, and add that to your background:

  1. Download the ubuntu-backgrounds.xml file.
  2. Right click on the Desktop, and select Change Desktop Background (or you go to the System menu and select Preferences > Appearance and select the Background tab)
  3. Press the Add button, find and select the downloaded XML file (you may need to change the filter from Images to All Files.
  4. Press the Close button when finished.

You may use the XML file as a template and easily create your own set of rotating backgrounds.
